IDSM01 will be held on the site of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, California 94720 USA. The principal venue will be Building 71, Room 264 (Ghiorso Conference Room).
It is quite reasonable to get to IDSM01 by public transit rather than by individual rental car. Also, if you plan to get a car, check with your hotel about the availability and price of parking. Street parking during the day in this part of Berkeley is often limited to a few hours except for holders of a local residential permit, and these rules are alertly enforced.
Two airports serve this part of the San Francisco Bay Area: OAK (Oakland) and SFO (San Francisco). BART, the Bay Area Rapid Transit train system, is a quick, convenient, inexpensive way to get to Berkeley from either OAK or SFO.
The Bay Area’s third commercial airport, SJC (San Jose), is much further south and not usually chosen by travelers to Berkeley unless they also have business in the SLAC/Stanford/Silicon Valley area.
Taking BART to Berkeley
The BART website has an online trip planner that creates your itinerary, as well as rider guides for SFO and for OAK. The OAK trip involves an eight-minute, $6 ride on an elevated railway dedicated to connecting the airport and the nearest BART station, Coliseum. BART ticket machines in the stations accept cash and give change, and accept credit cards. The destination on BART is the Downtown Berkeley station on the Richmond line.
Airport Shuttle Service
A door-to-door shuttle is another popular option to and from SFO or OAK. (When interpreting shuttle-bus maps and tables, keep in mind that Oakland is in Alameda County, part of the “East Bay” region.) BayPorter and SuperShuttle are among the popular choices. A round trip to Berkeley on a shared door-to-door shuttle is about $60 from OAK and $70 from SFO, not including gratuity.
Airport Taxicabs
Taxicabs are available from both SFO and OAK but are more expensive (est. around $100 each way to and from SFO).
